Sophronia reminds us how we would crave the mundane if an incomplete life in the fun half-city was all we had. I believe the two halves of Sophronia are meant to be representative of the actions and activities we use to structure our lives on a daily basis.

On one side, there is the fun of games and leisure activities. The other is the more serious side, made up of necessary things we often wish we could skip like work, school, or chores; these are represented by the stone, marble, and cement of the serious half of Sophronia.

The serious side appears void of colour, whereas the fun side is very vibrant; it features a big top which is commonly red and white. I chose a warm red as my spot colour, opposed to a cool or bright red so that the city is shown through a soft and warm light.

I came across several portable workhouses and caged containers on the side of the road in front of a big construction site in the industrial area of Kaikorai Valley. This location reflected Sophronia’s semi-permanence well.

The artefact I found in the MET collection was an Armorer’s Hammer from the 18th-19th century. I imagine that hammer’s similar to the artefact and other work tools would be extremely common in Sophronia especially throughout the Business District’s short stay.

I used a narrow, sans serif type-face because I think it helps portray Sophronia as a thin city; which is how it was categorised by Calvino.
